In 2010, Causa Justa:Just Cause (CJJC) emerged from a strategic collaboration of two powerful Bay Area organizations: St. Peter’s Housing Committee and Just Cause Oakland. In 2015, they also merged People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER) in to CJJC, expanding capacity and geographic reach further into Black and Brown communities in East and West Oakland and in San Francisco’s Mission and Bayview neighborhoods. Over the last year, CJJC organized students and parents to push the Oakland City Council to place into law a 10% cap on rental increases in Oakland and limit the amount of capital improvement pass-throughs that get pushed from landlord to tenants; lead the coordination of a San Francisco city-wide Tenant Convention, where over 800 low-income residents attended to collectively develop policies and actions to stop the wave of evictions and loss of rent controlled housing in San Francisco; and worked with tenant leaders to pass the Tenant Protection Ordinance in Oakland to protect tenants from harassment and threats including the threat to call ICE. Over the next year with $15,000 grant support from Hazen, CJJC will expand its youth organizing to address gentrification and displacement on a regional scale and to preserve and stabilizes affordable housing in the Bay Area of California.
