APPP organizes African-American parents in 10 low-income, rural communities to develop strategic plans, implement community development projects, and organize campaigns on substantive policy issues they define. The panel links its chapters with more than 40 nonprofit, labor, and grassroots groups throughout Arkansas to address a wide range of social justice issues. In education, APPP chapters have identified equitable funding, including equitable taxes, and reducing the achievement gap through support for proven strategies as key foci. Hazen’s renewal grant for statewide organizing will support APPP’s work on funding issues and the efforts of local chapters to press for implementation of strategies proven to improve teacher effectiveness, including attention to cultural competence and restorative justice practices.
