A one year $25,000 renewal grant will support Coleman Advocate’s youth-led intergenerational drive for equity, with particular focus on education in San Francisco, through Youth Making a Change (YMAC). Coleman’s youth organizing work will help increase academic opportunities and support for African American, Latino and Pacific Islander students, so that all SFUSD students are fully prepared for college, union training or living wage work. Over the next year, YMAC will organize to hold the San Francisco Unified School District accountable to its commitment to close the achievement gap and to transform its approach to school discipline and develop the leadership of youth to make change in their schools and communities. Coleman Advocates will continue to contribute to the development of local, regional and national movements for education, economic, and racial justice with low-income youth of color in leadership, including the San Francisco Alliance, Communities United for Health and Justice, the Alliance for Educational Justice (AEJ) and Dignity in Schools (DSC) Bay Area chapter.
