Since 1994, InnerCity Struggle (ICS) has worked with youth, families and community residents in Boyle Heights, unincorporated East Los Angeles, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights to work together for social and educational justice. This renewal grant will support InnerCity Struggle’s (ICS) ongoing organizing efforts in six critical areas – college access, student dropouts/pushouts, discipline policies, family engagement, wellness, school funding/school redesign – that will move towards high quality, equitable education for students and help to transform the social and economic conditions for the majority Latino residents of East Los Angeles who are disproportionately impacted by lack of resources and quality learning opportunities. Over the last grant period, ICS leveraged a significant amount of district resources toward restorative justice programming, wellness centers and college preparation for East LA schools. Over the next year, ICS will continue to demand equitable distribution of LCFF (Local Control Funding Formula) dollars to the highest needs schools for academic interventions, Restorative Justice, Wellness/Health, and Community Schools resources/services; continue to organize students and parents to ensure the implementation of the School Climate Bill of Rights; and continue to advance Community Schools efforts at three Eastside high schools and district-wide.
