Renewal grants in 2012 and 2013 of $30,000 each will enable New Settlement Apartments to maintain its local education organizing and continue to play a leadership role in city and statewide organizing. New Settlement Apartments is a housing and community-building organization with a demonstrated track record of 21 years in community youth development, community service and community organizing toward education reform in public schools. The Parent Action Committee (PAC) is a parent and community organizing project of NSA made up of over 1,000 members strong, the PAC is led by 10-25 parents and a professional staff who guide campaigns in five underperforming schools in Community School District 9 (PS 64, MS 22, PS/MS 4, PS/MS 218 and PS 88). During the coming year the PAC’s D9 Schools Committee will fight for a District Improvement Plan that is impactful and can be effectively implemented. New Settlement Apartments will fight for accountability and enforcement of the plan, from the NYC DOE, NYSED and U.S. Department of Education. The Parent Action Committee will also continue to implement positive discipline practices in two low-performing metal detector middle schools and fight for the removal of metal detectors.
