Opportunity Fund grant toward organizing for education policy changes to improve the quality of information and support provided to immigrants families and to increase the capacity of immigrant parent organizers in New York.
ELL students often face tremendous barriers to academic achievement and graduation. Department of Education Family Welcome Centers routinely fail to inform families of essential information about appropriate program options for students developing English proficiency. Over the next year, with support from Hazen, NYIC education collaborative members will launch the Our Schools, Our Choices campaign to win concrete policy changes to improve Family Welcome Centers’ ability to work with immigrant families to make informed enrollment placements and thereby improve the quality of education for ELLs. Education Collaborative parents will also raise awareness among the public and policymakers of enrollment barriers newcomer immigrant families face at Family Welcome Centers and how they cripple ELL student achievement.
