This three-year $75,000 renewal grant will enable Padres & Jóvenes Unidos (PJU) to continue to build youth leadership and power toward ending the School to Jail Track in Colorado, including increasing Denver Public School (DPS) accountability around disciplinary policy. PJU’s youth will continue the College Prep for All initiative and continue organizing for a range of state and national initiatives to increase immigrant student access to higher education and to ensure health justice in Denver Public Schools. Over the coming years, PJU will organize parents and high school students of color as part of the DPS 2020 Health Agenda, a key opportunity to influence the broad agenda for healthy school climate and health equity in Denver. PJU will partner with the Colorado Trust in a multi-sector effort to build the health equity field in Colorado. PJU will establish a statewide network and campaign to enforce and strengthen the Smart School Discipline Law and organize parents to move policymakers to urgent action on the key issues of the Platform for Excellent Education, including More and Better Learning Time (MBLT), common core standards, preparing all children for grade level entry to K, access to high-performing schools, etc.
