Hazen’s $30,000 renewal grants in 2012 and 2013 will enable Philadelphia Student Union (PSU) to develop youth leadership to work on campaigns focused on teacher quality and equity, school funding and alternatives to privatization for low-performing schools and small community centered schools. PSU currently operates in five comprehensive neighborhood high schools and two magnet schools and its constituency is primarily low-income students from schools in west and south Philadelphia. PSU’s school reform programs can be divided into four parts: Leadership Development and Organizing Training, School-based Campaigns, City-wide Campaigns, and High School Survival Programs. In addition to school-based organizing, the Student Union runs citywide campaigns that bring together students from all their chapters. During the next year PSU will continue to expand its base and develop its leadership, build relationships with youth groups across the city, state and country and continue to take leadership roles on local and national coalitions.
