Power U Center for Social Change, incorporated in 1999, is a community-owned grassroots organization. Power U’s mission is to organize low-income communities directly impacted by institutional oppression by utilizing leadership development, promoting self-determination, and building community power to create an equitable and just society. Power U continues to build relationships with new organizations building allies’ knowledge and practice of Restorative Justice, a framework aimed to reduce the rate of suspensions and arrests, increase graduation rates, improve learning and the school’s performance overall. Hazen’s $30,000 grant in 2010 will support Power U’s youth-led education organizing work to improve schools and reduce the inequitable use of zero tolerance policy in Dade County.
