Hazen’s $30,000 renewal grants in 2012 and 2013 will enable Youth United for Change to build a broad based, youth-led democratic organization with the power to hold school officials and government accountable for providing all Philadelphia youth with a high quality education that will enable them to have a variety of options upon graduation, whether that is attending college, further training, pursuing a fulfilling career, or obtaining a stable job. YUC has grown to 2300 youth members, based primarily in five North Philadelphia high schools plus a Citywide Chapter and a Push Out Chapter that is organizing out-of-school and alternative school youth. During the coming year, YUC will focus on three campaigns – push out prevention and ending zero tolerance, school climate and safety; developing high quality career and technical education options; and the development of small schools that tailor curriculum and teaching to student needs and feature a high level of community involvement.
