Youth United for Change (YUC) is an organization of low-income high school students working to improve the quality of public education in their neighborhoods. It seeks to build a student-based, democratic movement able to hold school officials and government accountable for meeting the educational needs of Philadelphia public school students. Over the period of the previous strategic plan, YUC worked to effect district-wide changes aimed at improving outcomes for low-income students, English Language Learner students, and students of color as well as to make specific reforms to the five schools in which its members are concentrated. Hazen’s $30,000 grants in 2010 and 2011 will enable YUC to continue to develop student leaders and to organize for education reform in Philadelphia.
