East Palo Alto, CA

Youth United in Community Action (YUCA) provides a safe space in East Palo Alto for the empowerment of young people to lead environmental and social justice campaigns for positive systemic change through grassroots community organizing. This renewal grant will assist YUCA’s youth-‐led movement-building for affordable housing, education justice via restorative justice implementation in 3 local middle schools and high schools, and immigrant rights. This past year, YUCA led a rally and fair housing march that garnered enough community support to pressure City Council into stopping a local slumlord from implementing obscene rent increases on 25 low-‐income families. They also won passage ofa groundbreakingInclusionary Housing Ordinance by organizing a broad coalition of tenants, pro-Bono housing lawyers, and other housing justice organizations sharing testimony as to why this policy is critical to YUCA’s mission to defeat gentrification and uphold the community’s right to remain in Palo Alto.
