Originally founded to build support for a resolution to the funding equity lawsuit brought by the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, AQE has developed into a powerful voice for education equity. The organization, returning to the docket, brings together parents, teachers, and unions to develop a shared agenda, message, and campaign. Hazen’s grant will enable AQE to work with a coalition of advocates and the chair of the Assembly’s Education Committee to develop legislation for comprehensive school discipline reform, which will be introduced in the next month. The grant also will support AQE’s coordination of a statewide campaign, Stand Up for Kids, which will press for funding adequate to ensure that New York really does put children first, from birth through college, financed by increased personal tax rates for multi-millionaires. In addition, Hazen’s grant will support AQE’s firm opposition to an Education Tax Credit that diverts public funds to private schools.
