The Baltimore Algebra Project (BAP) is a youth-run and youth-led organization that tackles math illiteracy and seeks to empower youth within the city school system through math education, youth employment and student organizing. The organization has developed a strong reputation for effectiveness both in improving educational outcomes for its students and representing the interests of Black youth. Black youth in Baltimore run the organization, from scheduling tutoring appointments, to filing taxes, to identifying and training young people on youth organizing and leadership development and in identifying issues and tactics for campaigns. Hazen’s renewal grant will support BAP’s ongoing campaigns to end the overuse of standardized testing, dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, improve equity in wellness and nutrition at schools and to improve school climate in the district.
