This $30,000 renewal grant will enable CADRE to develop parent leadership from within South Central Los Angeles communities to hold public schools accountable for providing quality opportunities to learn, regardless of race and class and end school push-outs/dropouts. In 2011, CADRE expanded its target outreach to local teachers’ unions (UTLA) to obtain their support and buy-in of the full implementation of the LAUSD comprehensive school-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) school discipline policy. During the last grant period, as a result of CADRE’s work to mobilize parents and engage the LAUSD Superintendent suspension reduction was prioritized as part of the 2012-15 Strategic Plan and the District-wide suspension rate went down 37 percent. The teacher’s union has also agreed to use SWPBS as the template for developing union-supported, teacher-led professional development trainings on SWPBS. Over the next year, CADRE will continue to organize for District wide implementation of SWPBS, that funding is available for alternative discipline programs through the new local control funding formula and that parents and students a voice in how new school resources are spent.
