Khmer Girls in Action (KGA) was created with a mission to contribute to the movement for gender, racial and economic justice by building a strong, progressive, and sustainable community led by young Southeast Asian women and girls in Long Beach, CA. Long Beach has the largest Cambodian population outside of Cambodia. Many families resettled in Long Beach to reconnect with family they were separated from during the Khmer Rouge war and to seek mental, emotion and physical support services. Over the last three years, KGA helped to passed the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) resolution to promote positive alternatives to exclusionary school discipline; the Language Access Policy in Long Beach City Council to improve immigrants’ access to city services; secured the partnership and commitment of The Children’s Clinic for a Long Beach school-based wellness clinic and help to pass the Prop 47 statewide initiative – The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act. Over the next year with one year $15,000 support from Hazen, KGA will further develop its youth leadership and strengthen its base, monitor implementation of the positive school discipline resolution and continue to organize to provide alternative disciplinary policies and data
