California Native Vote Project (CNVPis the first-of-its-kindCaliforniastatewide effort to engage Native American communities across dozens of counties to build political power through an integrated voter engagement strategy. CNVPhas deep partnerships with California Indian Tribes and Native-‐led nonprofits as a member of the national Native Voice Network and the Native American Voting Rights Coalition. CNVP filed a complaint with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights for the failure of the Los Angeles Unified School District to comply with federal law regarding Tribal consultation for the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA requires that local educational agencies (LEA) consult with officials from Indian tribes or tribal organizations approved by local tribes “in a manner and in such time that provides the opportunity for officials from Indian tribes or tribal organizations to meaningfully and substantively contribute to such plan.” (20 U.S.C § 7918.)
