TODEC’s youth leadership program, Monarcas Luchadoras, prepares youth with tools to build power, take advantage of organizing opportunities, provides spaces for healing, identity development, and engaging in policy advocacy. They advance the educational, cultural, social, and political development of Latino immigrant youth throughout California’s Inland Empireby training them up to take leadership roles in their community, to advocate for social and political change, and to combat systemic racism. Among their 2019 organizing victories, Monarcas Luchadoras are helping to supervise the implementation of Measure W, a school improvement bond measure approved by voters in 2018. Measure W was passed with voter engagement mobilizations by the Monarcas to provide essential school improvements, including: building a new high school to relieve overcrowding at existing schools; completing the final phase of construction at Perris High School, including career technical education classrooms; expanding physical education and athletic facilities needed to support student health and fitness; upgrading career training facilities that prepare students for 21st-‐century careers in healthcare, biomedical science, computer science, agriculture and skilled trades; and modernizing school labs and technology needed to support high-quality instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math.
